The Social Change Film Series

Davis Center Social Change Film Series

In Fall Semester 2024, we are screening the following films with our partner, Images Cinema. All films are free and open to the public!

  • November 12, 7:30 PM: Crossing, with Images Cinema. In Georgian and Turkish with English subtitles.
    • Lia, a retired schoolteacher living in Georgia, hears from a young neighbour Achi that her long-lost niece Tekla, a transgender woman, has crossed the border into Turkey. Hoping to bring Tekla home after a period of estrangement, Lia travels to Istanbul with the unpredictable Achi to find her. Exploring the hidden depths of the city, they cross paths with a transgender lawyer called Evrim, who helps them in their search.

Director Levan Akin centers the vital spirit of Istanbul’s trans community in this poignant story of unlikely connection. With three exquisite performances that vividly transcend generational divides, Crossing is a defiant city symphony and a compassionate tale of hope, identity, and forgiveness.

Join the Davis Center three times per semester for a free film, discussion, and some thought-provoking content! The Davis Center is working diligently to highlight mainstream and independent films that speak to issues across various dimensions of diversity, including but not limited to ideology, social identity, injustice, as well as prejudice and discrimination. We aim to give students and our community the opportunity to learn about social change through film - to thereby broaden or deepen our appreciation and understanding.
