Kashmir: From Military Occupation to Settler Colonialism

The South Asian Students’ Association and Global Studies Department are hosting a talk by Mohamad Junaid, Associate Professor of Anthropology at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, that will take place on Thursday, May 8th in the Davis Center Multipurpose Room at 4:30 PM.

In this talk, Professor Junaid will situate recent developments in Kashmir within the region’s broader historical context, tracing its transformation from a military occupation to a settler colonial project.

Mohamad Junaid is a cultural anthropologist and Kashmiri scholar. His research focuses on indigenous sovereignty, self-determination, political subjectivity, youth activism, and critical geopolitics. His current book project, Rebel Dream: Postcolonial Empire and Political Subjectivity in Kashmir, is a historical and ethnographic account of the Tehreek movement for self-determination in Indian-controlled Kashmir.

Junaid’s work on military occupation, settler colonialism, space, and memory has appeared in several academic journals, edited volumes, and popular anthologies. His essays on contemporary politics in Kashmir and South Asia have been published in Guernica, The FunambulistAdi Magazine, Al-Jazeera, and TRT World.

This event is sponsored by the South Asian Students’ Association, Global Studies Department, and the Davis Center.
