Claiming Williams 2017

For the ninth annual Claiming Williams Day, the campus is invited to reflect on the theme of Moral Courage.  Through a series of workshops, panels, presentations and other activities on February 2, 2017, we will explore how, when, and why people act to do the right thing despite possible repercussions to themselves.  How is moral courage expressed at Williams? What prevents us – as individuals or institutions – from acting with moral courage? What are the moral crises of our time – and what can we do about them?  Two distinguished activists and authors will deliver keynote addresses.  In the morning, pioneering author, publisher, and activist Barbara Smith will discuss her work for social justice and inclusivity, from 1960s black freedom and black feminist movements to more contemporary struggles. In the evening, Shawn King, writer and activist, will discuss America’s new civil rights movement.
